Online Therapy FAQ’s:
What is online therapy?
Online therapy (also called online counseling, telehealth, therapy online) is a safe and secure way to begin working towards your goals, even while in isolation. Perhaps you have tried other chat-based options such as Talkspace, Regain or BetterHelp, the challenge with these platforms is that clinicians can only respond to your messages a few times throughout the day. You may also have looked into low-cost online counseling, while the challenge with this approach is that it only allots a short-term based therapy approach, limiting the amount of times you can meet with your therapist. New research and developments with online therapy, which is what I offer, has proven it’s effectiveness in establishing the therapeutic relationship and developing new coping skills from the comforts of your own home or office.
Together we will use video-based online therapy so that we can see each others body language, expressions and reactions as a way to build a strong, therapeutic relationship. We will establish a plan for therapy, build copings skills, manage emotional regulation and work towards whatever goals you have for yourself using online counseling.
Online therapy sessions last for 50 minutes and remove the hassle of having to commute to and from the appointment.
If you are considering online therapy, you might have some questions…
Is it private?
Yes, online therapy is private. I utilize a HIPPA compliant video system called Zoom. I will send you a unique link before each session as a way of maintaining privacy and security. Upon opening the link you will enter a virtual waiting room in which I will access permission for you to enter the online therapy room. This protects all forms of privacy breaches.
What if I’m not tech-saavy?
I find that clients are always surprised by how easy it is to use online therapy. I will walk you through the process and help guide you through any questions that you might have. If you have a video conferencing system that you use and prefer - I am happy to give it a try.
Does online therapy work as effectively as in person?
Seeing a therapist online is the next best thing to seeing a therapist in person. For some clients, I find that online therapy actually works better. Either way we will work together to develop a plan of action that is effective for you and your individual needs over online counseling.
IS THERAPY RIGHT FOR ME?
The short answer is yes. If you have come to my site and found your way to this page, chances are that scheduling a consultation is a great next step towards online counseling. No matter what you are coming to therapy for, I have found when a therapist and a client make a good fit, a client can create the personal awareness to approach life with more joy, compassion, and understanding.
WILL I RECEIVE A DIAGNOSIS WHEN I COME TO online THERAPY?
In my practice I utilize diagnosis only when necessary. For some clients a diagnosis can be liberating and for others a diagnosis can be limiting. Therefore, I take all factors into account and take plenty of time to fully understand a client before making a diagnosis.
HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO COME TO FEEL BETTER?
It is different for every person but most people come once a week. I like to maintain consistency with online therapy so we will try to find a consistent time the reoccurs each week. If we decide that once a week is not fitting we can look into meeting more frequently or less frequently, depending on your needs.
Types of therapy we can do online:
EMDR Therapy
I am specially trained to offer EMDR online. EMDR is a trauma-focused, clinically studied approach that works to adapt traumatic experiences and events in a more healthful way. It works at getting underneath the anxiety, depression, disordered eating/eating disorders to really understand the root cause of these behaviors and symptoms.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT works to help individuals face their fears without avoiding them. CBT is designed to help calm one’s mind, body and to help have a more clear understanding of who you are.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Much like CBT, DBT utilizes mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness to teach more healthful ways of living to reach your goals. Using DBT we will introduce skills to create better coping skills and habits.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is all about slowing down and creating space between your thoughts and reactions. Mindfulness is focused on the here and now. Together we will introduce present focused skills to bring the body and mind to a more calm and grounded place.
